Hands On Learning

Get involved with one of these projects during your next Byway adventure!

Chronolog

Chronolog crowdsources time lapses to tell stories about our environments.

Find a chronolog at the following sites along the Byway:

Cheyenne Bottoms Overlook https://www.chronolog.io/site/KWE102

Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area  https://www.chronolog.io/site/KWE101

Take a photo with your cell phone, follow the instructions on the sign to email the photo to chronolog.

View the photos in the site’s time lapse to see the changes in the landscape.

Christmas Bird Count

More than 40 CBC’s are held throughout Kansas.  Check http://ksbirds.org/ for a list of all the counts.

Counts along the Byway:

The Cheyenne Bottoms CBC is typically held on the first or second Monday after December 14

The Quivira NWR CBC is typically held on December 14 each year

Observations from the CBCs are compiled to form long-term trend data for bird populations throughout the United States.  Birders identify and count birds over a 24 hour period within a 15-mile wide diameter circle.

Monarch Watch

Help scientists understand the dynamics of the monarch’s spectacular fall migration through mark and recapture.

Sites along the monarch’s migration path provide opportunities for people to catch, tag, and reslease monarchs.  Tagged monarchs that make it to the wintering grounds in central Mexico can be documented.

Monarch tagging along the Byway:

Ks Wetlands Education Center’s Butterfly Festival is typically held the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in September.  https://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu/events/butterfly-festival/index.html

Quivira NWR’s Monarch Mania is typically held the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in September.  https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Quivira/Events/event_details/monarch_mania.html

eBird

Join the world’s largest birding community! Gather bird sighting information for specific locations worldwide to document bird distribution, abundance, and trends.  eBird is free and available to anyone.  Submit bird checklists or explore eBird data for Cheyenne Bottoms, Quivira NWR, and other hotspots along the Byway at https://ebird.org/
