Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count!

Cheyenne Bottoms – The annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count was held in December, and the results showed that 95 species of birds were present at Cheyenne Bottoms this winter.  The numbers were up.

Dr. Dan Witt’s nature photography is featured in the 2010 winter issue of Kansas Magazine and on the 2011 Kansas calendar!  Dr. Witt resides in Hoisington and has provided the Wetlands & Wildlife National Scenic Byway with numerous photos!

The Kansas Magazine also featured “65 Reasons We Love Kansas!”  Included in this listing was Mo’s Place Microbrewery in Beaver and cruising on the state’s 10 scenic byways!

Hundreds of small town residents gathered at a conference that showed how real-time technology is changing business and agriculture. Organizers of the “140 Characters Conference” provided information, perspectives, and insights to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The first ever small towns “140 Characters Conference” was held in Hutchinson today. “What happens in a small town, happens everywhere. Plus, we’re in a time where if you’re connected to the broadband net, it doesn’t matter where you work. It doesn’t matter where you live. We’re all the same, the world did become flat,” said Jeff Pulver, 140 Characters Conference founder.

Barb Alpers participated in the conference as both a small town resident and a farmer rancher from Hudson, Kansas. She helps organize the Facebook fan page for “Get Hudson Kansas.”"A lot of the people that have joined the ‘Get Hudson Kansas’ fans are people that were raised in Hudson, still have fond memories of it,” said Alpers. According to the 2000 census, Hudson’s population is 133, yet their Facebook page has twice as many people with 324 fans.

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in this picture. The local Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway Committee has formulated a Local Awareness Campaign to promote the area through tourism. Kansas Wetlands Education Center is a wonderful anchor for the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway which winds it way through Barton and Stafford Counties, according to Judy Walden, who has been hired to help the communities.

Hudson Cream Flour goes to France!

Since 1905, Hudson Cream Flour has been made in Hudson, Kansas (population 133) by Stafford County Flour Mills, one of the last independent flour mills in the United states. The mill specializes in flour for the home baker.
